Painting with Lights
Painting with Light is becoming increasingly popular as it's something unusual in photography. To do PWL you need to have a long exposure and a slow shutter speed. If you have the opposite for both techniques you will find that it will not work. Your first attempt may not come out as you planned, so change the settings until you find the right outcome.
It may look easy when you have all the final settings sorted out but you will find that it isn't so much. You need to make sure that your camera is in a steady position, so a tripod will be the best use. You need make sure that a selected of settings are all correct and then you need to make sure your light is a well working one.

Testing Out

Before we started to do more creative work we decided to play around with it at first. As this was our first time doing this we wanted to know the effects it would make and what colour and movement would look best.
The four images you see were with different speeds, different settings and different colours.
The first image (top left) was the first one we did. We just did a simple plain 'circle' really fast. The picture shows the outcome.
The second image (top right) was with the same colour but at a different speed. We did this one much slower than the first one.
The third image (bottom left) had a different light setting, we had it on a 2 second timer which made the light turn on and off. This was done at fast speed.
The fourth image(bottom right) was done by two colours, purple and blue. We did this as a quick motion at high speed.

Outlining Thin Air

After playing around a bit, we choose to try and outline objects and words with no stencil. We tried faces, words, and people. This was a lot harder to do as we couldn't see what we had done and what hadn't.
The first image is the word 'love'. To do this we had to write backwards, which was difficult. You can obviously write forwards and switch the image to the left to get it to be the right way, but we choose the difficult way.
The second image was a recreation of 'Goofy' on the Disney channel. We used two colours, one each side to try and make it look symmetrical.
The third image was our attempt at doing a person. As you can see it didn't go according to plan. Though you can still tell that it is a human outline.

Outlining Objects

When we finally got around to painting around objects we knew what to se the shutter speed and what colours looked best.
The first image is of a chair. Doing the chair was a lot harder than we originally thought as it stands up by four legs - it was difficult to remember where you had moved the light. And to make it look 3D was difficult.
The second image is an outline of a human. We used three colours in this to make it look more ghostly. Again, it didn't go to plan as the 3D'ness didn't come out as planned.
